BLACK. Masters of Black in Fashion & Costume at the ModeMuseum in Antwerp was one of my favorite exhibitions this year. It was so interesting and beautifully presented that I had to visit it twice. This post is appearing here a little late, but it’s worth taking a look at these wonderful designs.
The exhibition illustrated different historical phases of the color black, from historic costume to contemporary fashion, its symbolism and various cultural connotations. It was divided into thematic sections – some of my favorites were Black Dye, Noble Black, Mourning or Fashion, Film Noir, Romance & Rebellion, Raf Simons, Ann Demeulemeester, Masters of Light: Embroidery, and Masters of Light: Texture.
Next to historic dresses and accessories, paintings, and mourning jewels, MoMu presented Belgian and international designers known for their use of the color black, including Haider Ackermann, Ann Demeulemeester, Olivier Theyskens, Gareth Pugh, Comme des Garçons, Raf Simons, Iris Van Herpen, and Rick Owens.
It’s time to go back to Belgium – A.F.Vandevorst recently launched AKTION III, taking their AKTION concept this time to Ghent.
After visiting AKTION I in Antwerp, I took a little trip to the Belgian seaside town of Knokke last August to check out GUSTAV. Housed in a historic building, GUSTAV was a collaborative project and home to A.F.Vandevorst’s AKTION II guerilla store and Ghent-based Hoet Bekaert Gallery, among others. It was an interesting place created to enjoy culture, fashion, design, art, and coffee.
AKTION II was open in the summer, until the end of September. Here are some pictures, including the ‘Gustav’ newspaper published on the occasion of this event – nice graphic design by Jelle Jespers.
